Gervais’ OT goal puts Maroons on brink of clincher
Gabe Gervais’ power-play goal 1:09 into sudden death gave the Chatham Maroons a 3-2 win over the Sarnia Legionnaires on Saturday at the Sarnia Arena.
The win gives the Maroons a commanding 3-1 lead in the GOJHL Western Conference quarterfinal.
The Maroons can clinch the series with a win in Game 5 on Sunday, a 7 p.m. faceoff at Memorial Arena.
Sarnia’s Chase Clark took a costly high-sticking minor with four seconds left in regulation.
Gervais, who sat out two of the first three games in the series, turned out to be the hero for the Maroons as he scored the game-winner 69 seconds into overtime.
It was the second game in Sarnia decided in overtime. In Tuesday’s second game of the series, Chase scored the game-winner 1:13 into overtime in Sarnia’s 6-5.
Chatham won the opener 5-4 and the third game 3-0, both on home ice.
Chase’s power-play goal was the only scoring in the first period on Saturday, as the Maroons outshot the Legionnaires 12-5.
Thor Skalski tied the game 4:36 into the second period with his third goal of the series.
Mike MacIntyre put the Maroons ahead 11 minutes later with his second goal in four games.
The Legionnaires forced overtime when Jeff Pauley beat Mike Ostropolec with just 1:33 left in the third period.
Ostropolec made 28 saves as the Maroons held a 38-30 edge in shots.
A Legionnaires’ win on Sunday sends the series back to Sarnia for a sixth game on Thursday. Game 7, if necessary, is Sunday, March 14 at Memorial.
