Highgate Wolves win Ontario Summer Games qualifier

The Highgate Wolves bantam girls softball team won a qualifying tournament to advance to the Ontario Summer Games in Sudbury in August.

The Wolves defeated St. Marys 6-4 in the final game of the Ontario Rural Softball Association regional qualifier in Princeton.

The teams were tied 3-3 before Highgate scored three times in the top of the sixth to take the lead.

Highgate went 3-0 in pool play to advance to the final.

They defeated host Princeton 9-4 in the opening game, followed by a 12-3 victory over Hickson before rallying for a 5-4 win in their first meeting with St. Marys in a battle of undefeated teams.

The bantams will go to Sudbury Aug. 10-13 for the Ontario games.

The Wolves are 5-1 in the Lambton-Kent league, outscoring their opponents 98-55.

They beat Oil Springs 20-8, Petrolia 15-0, Alvinston 21-7, Glencoe 21-13 and Sarnia 15-11 while falling to Corunna 16-6.
