Haskell’s bid for historic first win spoiled in waning laps

Gregg Haskell was less than 10 laps away from his first career feature win.

But it wasn’t just another Saturday night feature – it was a memorial race in honour of his father Rick Haskell, a long-time track worker at South Buxton Raceway who passed away in 2007.

The Chatham driver took the lead at the drop of the green flag for the Dover Sanitation UMP Late Model 25-lapper.

But Haskell’s bid for a historic victory ended when he bobbled coming of turn four on lap 17 and the veteran Brad Authier made what proved to be the winning pass.

Major announcements for championship night, Shootout

South Buxton’s season championship night on Saturday, Sept. 11, has been renamed Support Our Troops Championship Night.

‘Country’ meets ‘heavy metal’ at South Buxton on Saturday

NEW SBR LOGOThere will be country music in air but the action will be heavy metal down on the track on Saturday night at South Buxton Raceway.

The 2010 points chase is headed for the finish line as last Saturday’s rainout was not what several contenders needed in their hopes of making late-season runs for their division crowns.

There are just three weeks remaining in the 2010 regular season, including this Saturday’s Country 92.9 FM Night At The Races.

Simpsons Fence and All Canadian Tools & Industrial Supplies, both on Richmond St. in Chatham, are co-sponsors for Saturday’s racing action.

Ballhawks volleyball sets tryout dates

Ballhawks logoTryouts for the Chatham-Kent Ballhawks volleyball program begin on consecutive Sundays, beginning Sept. 19, at Chatham-Kent Secondary School. Tryouts are open to all players in Chatham-Kent.

Kent Phillies girls hockey program hits ice this month

The new Kent County Girls Hockey Association takes the ice this season.

The new association is an amalgamation of girls hockey programs in Blenheim, Ridgetown, Dresden and Bothwell.

The teams will be called the Kent Phillies.

Local trio finish fourth at Ontario Games in girls hoops

Highgate girls fastball team held scoreless in two games

The St. Clair Region U-15 girls basketball team – featuring Chatham’s Bridget Carleton and Devyn Demars and Dresden’s Aryn Finley – finished fourth at the Ontario Summer Games.

The St. Clair Region team, comprised of players from the Windsor-Chatham-Sarnia area, lost to South Simcoe 61-37 in Friday morning’s bronze medal game.

Carleton had four points, eight rebounds and an assist while Finley had five points, four rebounds and a blocked shot, with Demars getting a rebound and a steal.

Tractors and Trucks take over South Buxton on Friday

Pain Court's Orville Couture opened the season with six straight wins in the 9300 and 10000 Super Farm Tractors divisions on the SWOTPA tour.

The Southwestern Ontario Tractor Pullers Association pulls into South Buxton Raceway on Friday for the second annual Tractor Pull.

Seven classes of tractors and four divisions of trucks will take part in the competition, which drew a full house last summer.

The admission is $10 for all fans 16 years and over; $5 for fans ages 6-15; while 5-and-under will be admitted free.
