The Maple City Brewers will try to shake off the disappointment of their two-and-out quick exit at the Ontario Baseball Association ‘C’ tournament when they host the Courtright Cardinals on Wednesday.

The game is the first in the Western Counties Senior Baseball League best-of-three final.

Game time is 7 p.m. at Fergie Jenkins Field at Rotary Park.

The Brewers went two-and-out at the OBA ‘C’ tournament in Orillia.

The Brewers were eliminated on Saturday by South West London 4-1, after bowing to Tillsonburg 6-4 in Friday’s opener.

Denny Toth held South West London scoreless until the top of the fifth when they tied the game at one. South West London scored the go-ahead run in the sixth and added two insurance runs in the seventh.

The Brewers’ only run came in the third when Matt Knights singled, stole second and scored on Joey Hewak’s RBI single.

Scott McGuigan doubled while Joel Smith, Jason Shaw and Ryan Gore added singles as the Brewers stranded eight runners.

Toth allowed one run on six hits while fanning four.

Matt Rylett took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on four hits with one strikeout.

In Friday’s game, Tillsonburg took a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh as the Brewers staged a late rally with three runs but stranded the tying run on base.

Joel Smith, Hewak and McGuigan had RBI singles in the finale frame. Weaver and Jarrod Lucier got on board with basehits and Shaw was safe on an error. Hewak and McGuigan, however, were stranded.

The Brewers scored in the bottom of the fourth as McGuigan walked and came home on Greg Sinclair’s double to cut Tillsonburg’s lead to 3-1.

Joel Smith, McGuigan, Hewak and Knights had Maple City’s other hits, all singles.

Dave Smith went the first 4⅓ innings as he was responsible for five runs on five hits and four walks while fanning two.

Rylett went the final 2⅔ innings, giving up a solo home run while fanning two.

In the Western Counties semifinals, Maple City ousted the Corunna Giants in three games while the Cardinals upset the first-place Port Lambton Pirates in two straight.

The dates for Game 2 in Courtright and Game 3 at Jenkins/Rotary, if necessary, have not been announced.

The Brewers were eliminated by the Woodslee Orioles in the first round of the Essex County playoffs.

The Minor Mosquitos went 6-0 in the OBA ‘A’ tournament in London on the weekend, capped off by a 7-3 win over Peterborough in Monday’s championship game.

All but one of the Minor Mosquitos won an OBA ‘B’ championship at the Senior Rookie level last September in Chatham.

“I thought going in that we had a top-four team,” said manager Colin McGregor.

“I didn’t know if we would have enough pitching to go all the way.”

As it turned out, the elements helped the Diamonds get to Monday with ace pitcher Conner Goldsmith on the mound.

A rainout and a second game postponed due to an infestation of wasps backed the tournament up to Monday.

Updated with Major, Minor Peewee reports

OBA rules restrict pitchers to 70 pitches in one day and 45 on the ensuing day at this level. A pitcher cannot appear in three straight days.

As it turned out, the Diamonds had their top pitchers – Goldsmith and Brandon Tennant – both available for their limits on Monday since they did not pitch Sunday.

“We’re fortunate to have eight boys who can pitch, so we were able to get through Sunday and have Connor and Brandon available to throw their maximum (70 pitches) on Monday,” McGregor said.

Goldsmith struck out 14 batters, allowing only two runs on two hits before exiting in the fifth with two out when he reached his pitch limit.

Tennant gave up one run over the final 1⅔ innings to earn the save.

The turning point came in the fifth inning when Chatham’s Evan Rogers stole home with two out to break a 1-1 tie.

“It was the perfect situation because no one was paying attention to Evan,” McGregor said. “They had just brought in a new pitcher and when the catcher threw the first pitch back to the pitcher, we sent Evan home.”

McGregor said the intensity “was like a Bantam game because of Connor and Peterborough’s pitcher.

“They are the two best pitchers at this level in Ontario. Fortunately, their pitcher reached his limit sooner than Goldie.”

The Diamonds added five more runs in the final two innings off Peterborough’s bullpen to clinch the championship.

Spencer Marcus tripled, Ethan Lutz and Rogers doubled, Alec McGregor and Spence singled.

Had Chatham lost, a second game would have been necessary to determine a champion in the double-knockout format.

McGregor said that having the tournament spaced out over four days was also beneficial to his squad since they only had 10 players.

“But in a way, having 10 players actually helped us,” he noted, as every player on the roster gets to bat at this level.

Peterborough, by contrast, had a 14-man roster.

“This meant our three best hitters got to the plate more often than their best hitters,” McGregor said.

The Diamonds opened the tournament with a 10-6 win over Waterloo on Friday.

Marcus tripled and singled twice, Grant Spence and Ethan Paxton had three singles each while Rogers doubled and singled.

Tennant got the win pitching three innings, giving up three runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Goldsmith earned the save with two shutout and hitless innings of relief.

In their first game Saturday, Goldsmith homered and singled twice while Paxton also went yard in a 21-13 win over Guelph.

Lutz tripled and singled, Rogers doubled and singled while McGregor had three singles.

Spence earned the win and Goldsmith the save.

In Saturday afternoon’s game. Paxton tripled and doubled as Chatham defeated Cambridge 12-7. Spence doubled and McGregor had two singles.

Marcus was the winning pitcher with Goldsmith getting the save with two hitless innings, fanning four.

The Diamonds defeated Vaughan 14-4 on Sunday morning in a battle of undefeated teams.

Spence had a double and single, Rogers a triple and Tennant a single.

Marcus got the win and Rogers the save.

The Diamonds earned a trip to the final undefeated with a 21-15 win over London North later Sunday.

Goldsmith lined a double and three singles while Spence ripped five singles and Paxton four.

Spence got the win while Rogers got the save with two innings of hitless relief.

Colton Shoemaker, Brady Moon, Bryce Joseph, Rogers, Spence, Marcus, Paxton, Lutz, Goldsmith and McGregor were members of last year’s Senior Rookie OBA champs. Tennant, a Wallaceburg native, was in his first year playing in Chatham.

The current Senior Rookie Diamonds went 1-2 in their OBA ‘B’ tournament at Jaycee Park.

The Beselaere Construction Major Mosquitos also went 1-2 in their provincial tournament at Thames Campus.

Chatham’s other three teams also went 1-2 at their OBA tournaments on the Labour Day weekend – the Moose Lodge Minor Peewees (‘B’) in St. Thomas, the Moose Lodge Major Peewees (‘A’) in Niagara Falls and the Minor Bantams (‘A’) in Vaughan.

The Midgets went 1-2 last weekend in their OBA ‘B’ tournament in Mississauga.

Major Mosquitos bow out as hosts with 1-2 mark

The Chatham Beselaere Construction Major Mosquito Diamonds were eliminated from the Ontario Baseball Association ‘A’ tournament after a 10-2 loss to Essex in the third round Saturday afternoon at Thames Campus.

The Diamonds mercied Thorold 19-8 in earlier Saturday after dropping a 15-7 decision to Aurora in Friday’s opener.

Chatham scored twice in the bottom of the second to tie the game at two, but Essex scored single runs in the third and fourth before taking control with a four-run fifth.

The Major Mosquitos were held to just four hits – a double by Cory Russelo and singles by Alex Benjamin, Casey Reaume and Preston Whiteye.

In their win over Thorold, Benjamin tripled twice, singled and drove in four runs while Mitchell DeJong tripled, double and singled and Noah Wiseman tripled and drove in three runs to lead Chatham, who opened a 13-2 lead after two innings.

Dylan Haddock had three basehits and two RBIs while Whiteye doubled and singled, Trevor Brown had two singles with Devon Bowden, Austin McCready, Reaume and Russelo adding a basehit each.

In Friday’s opener, Aurora led 10-5 after four innings and put the game away with a five-run sixth as they defeated the Diamonds 15-7.

Russelo tripled, singled and drove in three runs for Chatham. DeJong doubled while Haddock had three basehits and two RBIs, with McCready, Reaume and Whiteye collecting singles.

Senior Rookies’ explosive start diffused by two Saturday losses

The Chatham Senior Rookie Diamonds got off to a great start with a 20-0 whitewash over Stratford on Friday afternoon but went 0-2 on Saturday – losing to St. Thomas 20-16 and to Woodstock 24-18 – for an early exit as tournament hosts.

The Diamonds scored three runs in each of their first four at bats before putting the mercy-rule in effect with an eight-run fifth.

Nolan Lucier tripled and singled twice while Craig Spence and Grayson Ladd both had a double and three basehits to lead the offence. Spence also scored four times and Ladd three.

Garret Day, Dakota VanGoethem and Austin Haddock all had three singles. Matthew Kling, Darian Steele, Nathan Rogers, Brendan Hunter and Mathew Hawryluk had two basehits apiece and Anderson Fenton one.

St. Thomas used an eight-run first to take early command of Saturday’s first game for the Diamonds.

Ladd lined four doubles while Spence, Day, VanGoethem, Steele, Rogers and Hunter all doubled and singled. Hawryluk collected three singles with Lucier and Haddock adding two each.

In their elimination game, Rogers led the sticks with two doubles and two singles. Steele also doubled while Day had four singles, Ladd and VanGoethem had three each, Spence, Fenton, Kling, Lucier and Haddock had two each and Hawryluk one.

The Senior Rookies went 30-11 overall including a tournament win in Windsor and a second-place finish at London Oakridge.

Minor Bantams’ bats go silent following opening-game rout

The Chatham Minor Bantam Diamonds put together an 18-run uprising in the second inning of their opening game 24-2 rout over Kitchener at the Ontario Baseball Association ‘A’ tournament in Vaughan.

The Diamonds only managed six runs over 16 innings in their final two games and wound up coming home early with a 1-2 record.

The Minor Bantams fell to Aurora 6-1 and to Ajax 6-5 in Saturday’s games and were eliminated from the double-knockout format.

Tyler Udvari doubled, singled three times and drove in five runs in Friday’s opening game rout over Kitchener, which was called after three innings by the time limit.

Eric Stewardson had three ribbies on a pair of hits while Kellen Kaniecki had an RBI triple. Alec Miller had a single and three RBIs while Connor Corchis and Mark

VanRycheghem had a single and two ribbies each. Austin McClinton added a double and Drew Medd a single.

Miller allowed just one hit while fanning four in the three-inning victory.

The bats went silent in the loss to Aurora as Kaniecki and VanRycheghem singled for Chatham’s only hits.

VanRycheghem allowed two runs in five hits with three strikeouts in five innings. Stewardson mopped up, allowing four runs on two hits.

The Minor Bantams opened a 4-2 lead after three innings in their third game but Ajax eventually came back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings tied at five.

Ajax scored the winning run in the ninth to send Chatham home.

Udvari had three singles while Tom Harwood, Stewardson, Miller and McClinton all singled.

Udvari went the first 3⅓ innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Kaniecki went the next 3⅔ innings giving up three unearned runs on one hit, fanning four.

McClinton took the loss as Ajax scored the winning run before an out was recorded in the ninth following a scoreless eighth.

Major Peewees’ offence goes south in two losses Saturday

The Chatham Moose Lodge Major Peewee Diamonds got off to a good start in Niagara Falls with a 7-5 win over Brantford in Friday’s opener.

But the Diamonds went 0-for-Saturday, collecting just five total hits in an 11-1 loss to Barrie and a 5-0 whitewash against Oakridge.

In Friday’s opener, the Diamonds scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to break a 3-3 tie and added single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Colin Smith and Drew Marlatt doubled while Matt Balkwill, Luke VanRycheghem and Matt McMahon lined two singles each. Kyle Coatsworth added a basehit.

Tanner Goldsmith earned the win, allowing three runs in four innings. Nolan Holmes picked up the save.

Barrie exploded for five runs in the first inning and four in the second en route to the mercy-rule win in Saturday morning’s game.

Goldsmith, Smith and VanRycheghem had Chatham’s only hits, all singles.

VanRycheghem suffered the loss.

The Diamonds’ season came to an end later Saturday as Oakridge scored single runs in five of their six at-bats.

Marlatt and Coatsworth singled for Chatham’s only hits.

Lee Kucera started and took the loss, allowing three runs in three innings. Balkwill and Marlatt gave up a run each.

Minor Peewees can’t recover from second-game heartbreak

The Chatham Moose Lodge Minor Peewee Diamonds also won their opening game but were eliminated after two losses on Saturday.

The Diamonds used a pair of four-run uprisings to crush Georgetown 12-3 in Friday’s opening game.

Chatham had a 5-1 lead in Saturday morning’s game but Milton scored three times in the fifth and twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 walk-off win.

The Diamonds never recovered from the heartbreaking loss as they were mercied by Delaware 18-0 later Saturday to end their season.

Individual statistics were not provided.

Gregg Haskell was less than 10 laps away from his first career feature win.

But it wasn’t just another Saturday night feature – it was a memorial race in honour of his father Rick Haskell, a long-time track worker at South Buxton Raceway who passed away in 2007.

The Chatham driver took the lead at the drop of the green flag for the Dover Sanitation UMP Late Model 25-lapper.

But Haskell’s bid for a historic victory ended when he bobbled coming of turn four on lap 17 and the veteran Brad Authier made what proved to be the winning pass.

One lap later, Ridgetown’s Dale Glassford also passed Haskell and wound up finishing second.

“It’s going to be a tough pill to swallow after leading so many laps,” a disappointed Haskell said after his third-place finish.

“Gregg was driving a great race,” said Authier, after his second straight and fifth feature win of the season.

But he anticipated trouble for Haskell.

“I could see him smoking the tires off the car,” Authier said.

“We were just waiting for a break. He gave me an opportunity when he pushed up going into three and four,” Authier said.

Haskell said the rash of cautions hurt his momentum and led to his tire problems.

“I had a good run, but going from hot to cold to hot to cold with all of those cautions, the right rear tire just sealed over,” he said, as one four-lap run was the race’s longest green-flag stretch while Haskell was in the lead.

Authier’s pivotal pass came after a restart following the sixth of eight cautions.

Wallaceburg’s Mike Lewis and Chatham’s Kirk Hooker rounded out the top five while Jason Haskell, Gregg’s younger brother, recovered from two early-race incidents to finish sixth.

Authier also won the heat and pursuit races to pad his lead to 19 points over Glassford going into this Saturday’s championship night.

Glassford, who led the standings since opening night, surrendered the points lead when he raced with the Ontario Dirt Late Models at Brighton Speedway last Saturday while Authier stayed home and won the feature and heat races, turning a 90-point deficit into a five-point lead.

Authier and Glassford will start side-by-side on the front row of Saturday’s championship race which will also determine the points champion.

Saturday’s other three feature winners are no strangers to the Winners’ Circle, although two ended long famines.

Chatham's Louis Clements wins his first Sport Stocks feature since Sept. 5, 2009.

Chatham’s Louis Clements led all 20 laps to win his first Windride Transportation Sport Stocks feature since his championship race victory on Sept. 5, 2009. He won five features in each of the last two seasons.

“I can’t defend the points championship, so now the goal is to defend the championship race,” Clements said, looking ahead to a shot at a third straight title race win.

Clements, who moved up to 12th in the standings after missing over half the season with motor problems, will start in the sixth row of the championship race as the lineup is set by order of points.

“There will be enough cautions. We’ll just have to bide our time coming up through the pack and once we get up there, then we’ll put a good charge on for the win,” Clements said.

Chatham’s Eric Vanderiviere was second and extended his lead to 33 points over Essex’s Doris Lajeunesse, who finished fifth.

Chatham’s Todd Wellman and Tyler Lozon finished third and fourth.

Randy McKinlay receives trophy from Chris Mason and Mark Arnew of Express Lube in Tilbury after his Comp 4 win.

Chatham’s Randy McKinlay won his first Four Seasons Driver Education Comp 4 feature since his 2006 championship race victory, a season in which he dominated the class with 13 feature wins.

He spent the last three years in the Sports Stock class but didn’t win a feature.

The veteran driver had a scare before the race when he noticed a tire was going down. His crew got the tire fixed as got him back on the track for the green flag.

McKinlay wasted no time making up ground from his shotgun start, passing five cars on the first lap and all the way up to sixth on the fourth lap. He passed four more cars to take over second on lap five.

“It handled awesome,” McKinlay said of his quick trip through the field.

“The track conditions were dry-slick and these guys changed the set up,” McKinlay credited his crew. “It drove like it was on a rail.”

His progress from second to the lead, however, was derailed by a rash of cautions.

He ran second to Cottam’s Denis DeSerrano for six green flag laps and several cautions before finally taking the lead with three to go.

“It seemed like I passed him about five times but every time I did, the caution would come out,” said McKinlay, who brought out one caution himself for jumping the green on a restart.

Nate McNally got by DeSerrano on the final lap to finish second while Windsor’s Shawn Nelson was fourth and Blenheim’s Shawn Jones fifth.

Jones clinched at least a tie for the division championship as he will take a 70-point lead over Cottam’s Rob Quick into the championship night.

Jones will clinch the points title by starting the heat race.

Jim Dale Jr. continued his late-season surge with his second feature win in three weeks and fourth of the season in the Schinkels Gourmet Meats UMP Modifieds.

Jim Dale Jr. won his fourth Schinkels Meats UMP Modified feature race of the season and receives a trophy from Chris Mason and Mark Arnew from Express Lube in Tilbury.

He reduced the deficit to 69 points behind Merlin’s Brad McLeod, who can clinch his eighth career points crown by starting the heat and feature.

“I’ve got an engine that will stay together,” said Dale when asked about his resurgence.

Dale Jr. has two wins and two seconds in the last four features since his last DNF on July 31. He has also won all four heat races since his last motor change.

Woodslee’s Clayton Smith finished second, followed by Rutherford’s Chris Van De Wiele, McLeod and Chatham’s Jeff Daniels.

South Buxton will salute the Canadian Armed Forces in Saturday’s Support Our Troops Championship night, which will be preceded by a military opening ceremony starting at 6:45 p.m.

The points races will conclude with the championship features in each class.

South Buxton’s season championship night on Saturday, Sept. 11, has been renamed Support Our Troops Championship Night.

Members of the Canadian forces will be honoured in a pre-race military ceremony.

Military vehicles will be on display and all active service personnel will be admitted free, with proper ID.

Jeff Daniels, the defending Schinkels Gourmet Meats UMP Modified championship race winner, has a new Support Our Troops paint scheme on his No. 20D in honour of the occasion.

His car will be on display at Schinkels Gourmet Meats in Chatham this morning and afternoon before going out to the track for the night’s races. The vehicle will also be on display on Sept. 11 at Aaron’s on St. Clair St. in Chatham.

Fans will be able to sign the Daniels’ car with a special pen. After championship night, the car wrap will be removed and sent to the Canadian troops in Afghanistan.

Donations to the Soldier On Fund can be made at the race track.

Support for our Canadian armed forces is special in the hearts of South Buxton infield worker Bernie Rombouts, brother of Anne Rombouts, her husband Blake Outhouse.

Bernie’s niece, Major Corporal Kristal Giesebrecht of Wallaceburg, was fatally wounded in Afghanistan on June 26. Giesebrecht, a medic on her second tour of duty, was 34.

Blake’s son Ian Outhouse served a tour of duty with the Canadian Army in Afghanistan.

South Buxton also announced plans for the sixth annual Canadian Fall Shootout on Saturday, Sept. 25.

There will be three classes of competition – the UMP Modifieds and Late Models will be the main events with Sport Stocks added as a support class.

Track officials were hoping to include sprint cars but major events in Michigan and New York states are scheduled for the same date.

The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 26.

Blenheim’s Andrew Reaume is the defending Late Model Shootout winner while Brian Ruhlman of Clarklake, Mich. is the two-time reigning Modified winner.

The 2010 season continues with Week 15 tonight. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with racing starting at 7 p.m.

The fourth annual Rick Haskell Memorial Feature for the Dover Sanitation UMP Late Models highlight’s tonight’s race program.

Chatham’s Brad Authier is the new points leader in the Late Models with two race nights remaining in the points race.

Authier’s feature and heat race wins last Saturday erased a 90-point deficit as he takes a five-point lead over Ridgetown’s Dale Glassford going into tonight. Glassford, the defending series champion who has led the points standings since opening night, took last week off to race with the Ontario Dirt Late Models at Brighton Speedway.

The closest race is in the Windride Transportation Sport Stocks, as Chatham’s Eric Vanderiviere is only 17 points ahead of Essex’s Doris Lajeunesse.

Merlin’s Brad McLeod, a seven-time track champion, has an 80-point lead over Shrewsbury’s Jim Dale Jr., a six-time track champ and reigning Schinkels Gourmet Meats UMP Modified title holder.

Blenheim’s Shawn Jones is 49 points ahead of Cottam’s Rob Quick in the Four Seasons Driver Education Comp 4s.

The points chase includes the heat, pursuit and feature races tonight and Sept. 11.

In case of rain today, please check www.southbuxtonraceway.com for the status of the race program.
