Gregg Haskell was less than 10 laps away from his first career feature win.
But it wasn’t just another Saturday night feature – it was a memorial race in honour of his father Rick Haskell, a long-time track worker at South Buxton Raceway who passed away in 2007.
The Chatham driver took the lead at the drop of the green flag for the Dover Sanitation UMP Late Model 25-lapper.
But Haskell’s bid for a historic victory ended when he bobbled coming of turn four on lap 17 and the veteran Brad Authier made what proved to be the winning pass.

It was hard to tell what made Eric Vanderiviere happier – winning his fifth Windride Transportation Sport Stocks feature of the season or making an impressive debut in the Dover Sanitation UMP Late Models.
“It was exciting to do both, I had a blast in Brad’s car,” Vanderiviere said.
Vanderiviere hopes his strong fourth-place showing in Brad Authier’s backup car in the Late Model feature will land him another ride, perhaps in the season-ending Shootout on Sept. 25.
“We’ll see how he thinks I made out tonight,” said Vanderiviere.
Authier wasn’t able to see how Vanderiviere was doing himself – he was too busy winning the Late Model feature race for a fourth time in 2010.
‘Country’ meets ‘heavy metal’ at South Buxton on Saturday
There will be country music in air but the action will be heavy metal down on the track on Saturday night at South Buxton Raceway.
The 2010 points chase is headed for the finish line as last Saturday’s rainout was not what several contenders needed in their hopes of making late-season runs for their division crowns.
There are just three weeks remaining in the 2010 regular season, including this Saturday’s Country 92.9 FM Night At The Races.
Simpsons Fence and All Canadian Tools & Industrial Supplies, both on Richmond St. in Chatham, are co-sponsors for Saturday’s racing action.
